It's so fascinating how our visions of things rarely (ever?) play out the way we think they will.

Your trip description made me curious about visiting New Orleans. The closest I've been was when we drove across the country and skirted through the city along the freeway. I saw glimpses of things down below on the street level, but I had to focus on driving. We were in a mad dash through the entire country from California to Florida in the middle of the pandemic. New Orleans is on my list.

The delight of all these surprises, like visiting a parallel universe where everything worked out in pleasant ways.

So great!! I love how travel subverts our expectations. I really enjoy New Orleans as a city, but have always avoided Mardi Gras for exactly the reasons you gave...now you've inspired me to want to go...and thank you for the shout out. :)

ah how cool - i would have totally had the same (wrong) assumptions about Mardi Gras, so it's refreshing to see it through an honest and open-minded lens! and WHAT NO WAY that's the same artist of the two paintings!! although maaaaybe i could've guessed if i'd honed in on just the dog's eyes.. 👀

I can see Spanish moss and trees in the dog’s shadows, but, yeah sure seems like it could not be so.
