Lots of folks in the STSC are writing fiction - so consider me inspired by Craig to try my hand at fiction again after a decade hiatus because. . . it is hard. This post is back to the 500 word exact mark. Ever since he’d heard the word “meteorologist” as a boy, he knew that was his path in life. Tho it wasn’t until the age of 12 that he found out meteorology was the study of atmosphere and weather, not meteors. But he was a rigid kid and had already spent years imagining a future of introducing himself to others as “Andrew, the Meteorologist.”
Really liked this piece Trilety, and I also really wanted to be an -ologist when I was a kid. A actually became one, at least on paper, but not really using an -ology these days :)
Ah thank you, Oleg! Which -ologist did you become that you no longer use? I come from a biologist mother and ecologist stepfather tho the bulk of my family are def NOT of -ology ha
Very cool! I had a couple Turkish friends when I was a wee pre-teen. She taught me this phrase as a substitute for "knock on wood," that was something like "shaytan kulana kurshon" that supposedly means bullet through devil's head, and you sort of pulll your ear when you do it. Is that legit? I do it to this day. It was so intriguing to me as a kid.
Yes, it's şeytan kulağına kurşun :). Basically, "lead on satan's ear". love the earlobe pulling thing as well. you also make a kiss-like sound with your lips.
Yes! I do the kiss thing too! Omgosh thank you! i have searched for this phrase and always came up short. I appreciate this so much as I may use it in a story/essay - maybe about superstition or soemthing and your verification is incredibly helpful.
Short and sweet, or I should say filled with ennui and bitterness tinged with hope. "He’d wonder if kids with prominent lisps eschewed professions like meteoriticist or esthetician for easier to pronounce jobs like pallbearer and painter" and "a single man with a penis and all" had me chuckling.
Recently, my professor friend posted, "There are many schools of thought on what students need and on being relevant to their universe of concerns. I am nearer to, 'my universe is awesome, get your helmets on and climb into the space jet.'"
This feels like a story about a man about to realize he still has a space jet gathering dust under a tarp in his garage. And I love that.
Ahhhh I love your comment - it is a grand story in itself! And I totally agree with your professor friend - let's ride! Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

On paper, I'm a turkologist - a specialist in Turkish studies.

Thank you for your comment and insight! And glad I could make you laugh - it's way easier in person than in word.
