Happy birthday! You know, I just baked a cake yesterday for my (adult) daughter's birthday. After years of making novelty cakes when they were kids, we've now settled into having the same birthday cake for all family members. A simple sponge filled with raspberries and whipped cream, topped with fondant icing. A new family tradition is born. Celebrate well
My favorite cake is not cake. I prefer pie, particularly more sour / tart fruit pies. My mother used to make three-berry pie; my aunt always remembered a cherry for me for Christmas dinner.
NYC is full of specialized, specific cupcake shops, but it's surprisingly arid of classic dessert pies. I know a few of the best places; mostly I head to Petee's Pie. One thing I've never really understood about this place. Pie's get more respect in my hometown.
Did you know there's a town in New Mexico called Pietown? I've not been.
I did not know that about Pietown but would visit in a heartbeat. NY's pie deficit reminds me of what Yuelian has said about Germany - no pies, all cakes. We made a three -berry pie at the bakery with a crumble top and we called it "Dazzelberry Pie" because it's what the grandmother of a friend of mine used to call mixed berry pies. Sour cherry is the Best!
ah wow, i too have a preference for pie over cake (though i do love me a good cheesecake - yum - although perhaps that's also more like a pie than a classic cake?) and back when i lived in nyc, i briefly wanted to start my own little pie shop called "Hip Pies", heh heh. it would specialize in both savory and sweet pies! 🤤 but alas, that was before i realized that i have no talent for baking...
Hhaha! Pie fillings are easy, it's the crust that requires made skills. And I know this about you preferring pie over cake which is why you landing in Germany - the land of no pie - is a culinary heartbreak haha. And cool about the pie shop idea!
Happy belated birthday! March 2 is also my husband's birthday, so as far as I know, only incredibly awesome people are born on this day.
I totally agree about the many horrible cakes that appear at weddings and birthday parties. I appreciate a moist crumb and a decadent frosting. The almond cake you described sounds like a dream. So, please come to very northern Scotland and bake it for me on April 30.
Ah yay,, that is fun to know about your hubby! The few stories you've relayed about him depict him as an extremely honest man who does not mince words - gotta love that! And oh, being in Scotland for your bday sounds like a delight - I will be baking you cakes in my imagination haha!
I adore many things about this post, but what really struck me was the card ritual you share with your stepfather. What a marvelous family tradition for you two.
And yes, 48 is definitely sexy. So is 68, but it takes more determination, lol
Hahah i love that last line! And true, sexy doesn't expire. Oh yea, the card tradition IS really special. It's a tri-fold Dr Seuss card so we still have room to fill it up and every year we add a new personalized element, along with the date. This year, he printed and cut out a little F1 car cuz he said he thought the Bruins logo was boring haha so he went with my other favorite sport. He will be 85 this year and each trade of the bday card gets more and more special. Thank you for commenting about that.
ahh you look so vibrant and alive in your 48th bday pic, i love it!! 😍 hope both cakes were as scrumdiddlyumptious as they sound, and i love the idea of freezing cake for both for your future and your past 💕

What a beautiful birthday post! Nobody gets that cake but you. :) and the photos are great--a lovely touch.
Many happy returns, Trilety!
Thank you so much! And the cake was DIVINE!
