I commented on the STSC post already yet I want to comment again here. Trilety this is so interesting! I don’t watch hockey cause I always thought of it as soccer on ice. But after reading this I will certainly see it in a better way. Yet this is more than a hockey story. This is sports writing of the best sort. Only you could do it this well.
Whoaa your insight about the goalie being the sentinel and not the target kinda blew my mind 🤯 (guess I had a similar attitude towards the position as an equally awkward, un-athletic kid!)
This was so much fun to read 😍 I had a brief stint as a Washington capitals fan circa 2009-2011, mainly because my ex was a big hockey fan, but this post actually reminded me of my hardcore days as a college bball fan even before that, back in HS when I used to lurk on fan forums and follow recruiting gossip and creep into the backdoor of practices and stalk my favorite players for as much info I could find online (those were the early days of the internet). I love how you emphasize the personal connection to the players bc that’s what I remember more than anything else too, even over my love of the game!! Exquisitely written as always, dear friend! 👏👏
